More of the Usual

Today was another standard day here in the Cannell household. Now, a standard day in my life these days is a bit odd, surreal, good, weird and good. Much better than one year ago when we were getting ready for a few days in the hospital for surgery. I won't get into all the nuances, but let's just say I'm focused heavily on training, coaching, spending time with my lovely (but currently sick) wife and finally work.

Today I woke up way too early, 4AM, done sleeping, fully rested so I bounced out of bed. On to the usually morning routine, coffee, 20 min later on the bike. Felt good from the first pedal stroke. Strong, light, efficient. Felt like a machine.

The workout planned called for 2x20 at 95% plus microbursts. I rocked out the first 20 at 98% - too hot but felt good. Deliberately held back on the second, but still a few watts above target. I always seem to do that, go too hard, exceed the goal, and make things harder mentally than they need to be. Micros were damn tough. Spun a bit extra, 1:45 at 1800KJ, solid work indoors.

It was cold out, hence 40ish degrees in the Cannell training lab. I had the arm warmers, hat, gloves all going with the fan of course. Such a weird feeling sweating like crazy, but having cold hands and feet. Anyway, at least I didn't overheat.

Wrapped up the workout, had a nice sweet potato for breakfast, all good.

This weekend we have on tap mid 70s and sunny in south carolina - so I can't wait. I should be packing some pretty good fitness, 20w more FTP than a year ago, so should be good. I love the RR course saturday, has some nice rollers and a longish 1-2KM uphill finish. Looking forward to the racing.

In other news we have our team camp (in WS NC) next weekend, should be a great time, good riding and socializing with the guys. A new addition to the team is joining me from northern VA - an old friend from my college days at virginia tech - so that will be fun. We have quite the masters team in the carolinas with the ability to compete in any masters field around with depth. Good stuff.

What else... Well, my insurance with my current company sucks, so follow up appointments to make sure I don't have a relapse of tumor growth, etc cost me a fortune. That sucks. That's about all I can think of at the moment - will report back after the race weekend.

Cheers,
Coach Cannell
