February 17th, 2009Morning workout - I just couldn't do it
Today I had planned 2x20:00 at 95%. Legs felt fresh after a rest day yesterday, but sometimes you never know how they will respond when the hammer comes down.
Today I just couldn't hold the required power - IT WAS TOO EASY! I kept finding myself drifting 10w higher than the target, so I abandoned the target power and went by feel. By feel I mean I rode at what 95% should feel like - I should know given the number of times I've done this workout. The result was a solid 344w and 349w interval set. Yeah. Of course that means it's time to man up and raise the FTP to 360w.
A huge advantage of interval work, other than the obvious fitness, is that in race situations it is a big confidence booster knowing you can hold a certain power for a long time - like in a break, you can just peg it at 375w or whatever and just think, damn, I can do this for a LONG TIME. And guys who don't do this kind of work will wither and fade away as you keep on hammering. That's how you ride guys right off your wheel.
This week is a typical race period race week for me - fitting in 3 or 4 workouts in 48hrs, then rest thursday, tune up friday and race sat/sun. out for sprints later today - rinse and repeat tomorrow.
On a side note, CCT athletes continue to KICK ASS all over the place. Marc Warner destroyed the Cat 3 field at the wolfpack crit, for a beautiful solo win. He also pummeled the field in the RR the day before. Other guys had great weekends as well - keep up the awesome work!
Cheers,
Pete
