- "After coaching myself for years and reading countless how to books on training I decided it was time to give a real pro a chance and see if it would make a difference in my riding. In my search I found a Blog of a guy by the name Pete Cannell. Here was a guy who was achieving great things with a style of caching that I could work into my busy schedule. Plus the fact that his one-on-one coaching seemed infinitely more valuable than some other coaching programs that I looked at. From day one Pete has shown a personal interest in seeing me get to my full potential . He lives for results !!!! as I am making continual gains its almost like he had made those gains for himself I guess for a Real Coach that is the way should be but I really didn't expect it to the degree that Pete has shown. He has made training fun!!!! During the course of just a few months Pete has coached me to the point that I am faster and stronger than anytime in my cycling career. I have spent a lot money on things to get faster. Pete is a Bargain."

- "My offseason training was in need of an overhaul. Several months of endurance riding during a base period just wasn't working for me. A friend of mine was familiar with Pete's training philosophy and suggested that I look into it. The two things that appealed to me most were the year-round focus on threshold training and longer-duration threshold intervals. The structured training plans are efficient and enable me to gauge my progress and fitness on a constant basis. My wife recently asked me how I like working with my new coach. I told her I have never been happier riding a bike. "

- "Even though last year I won the state championship for my age, I wasn't nearly as competitive at nationals as my first year, taking 11th place.
I had trained harder than ever before. But after trying to coach myself, I realized that I really needed a coach - somebody who could objectively monitor and determine
my training load - and get the training / rest ratio recipe right - which clearly was my biggest issue. When I found out that Pete was
coaching, I jumped on to that opportunity! Pete has already pushed me to power levels I've never seen before.
I'm enjoying his focused workouts, his flexibility to modify training loads when life offers it's bumps, and his refreshing words which boost my
self confidence when needed the most."

- "I've been working with Peter Cannell since the end of the 2008 road season and enthusiastically recommend him as a coach. Previously, I'd always taken pride in being a self-coached athlete, and adopted a structured, power-based approach to my workouts. I refined this approach over the years and, for the most part, it seemed to work. However, last season, I reached a plateau that I couldn't seem to overcome. Moreover, consecutive seasons of 40+ races were taking their toll both physically & mentally, and I found myself struggling to balance recovery, training, and racing with my off-the-bike responsibilities. Working with Pete has helped tremendously. The quality of my training has improved and I'm seeing significant gains in fitness and motivation. Workouts are extremely efficient. There's little wasted time. Pete's approach allows for more recovery, which in turn allows for higher quality workouts. The trade-off, of course, is that the workouts are often intense, meaning you'll need plenty of mental focus and determination to reap the benefits. In my opinion, it's well worth it. Pete is also extremely knowledgeable about a wide-array of topics including race tactics, nutrition, bike fit, and equipment. In short, he's a fantastic resource. Moreover, and perhaps most importantly, he's been very responsive to my questions, provides useful feedback, and willing to adjust "the plan" when life gets in the way. To summarize, my time working with Pete has been extremely productive. I'm excited about racing again and eager to see what I can achieve with his help next season!"

- "Training by power is very important to me but so is endurance for longer European road races; Pete's ability to tailor advice, training, and recovery to a wide variety of events is superior, and his willingness to quickly course-correct training plans is excellent for surprises during the season."

- "I was a new cat 4 when I was introduced to Pete. It was mid season, and I had a late start training. My winter training was very unstructured, which lead me to become unmotivated. I was competitive in the cat 5 arena, but moving into cat 4, I became a “middle of the pack” racer. I knew I needed a structured routine, and a coach was the only way for me to do that. I needed someone to give me to tools to push my limits and allow me to develop the strength and endurance to be competitive, whether I was racing crits or road races.
Within 6 weeks of starting Pete’s program, I knew things were different. I had some snap in my accelerations, and my endurance was markedly improved. I noticed myself moving further forward in the packs, and being able to confidently initiate moves, rather than just be reactive.
With no more than 6-8 weeks training, our big race week was upon us. The first race, I jumped out and soloed for several laps before being swallowed up for a group finish. The next two, I dialed it in and came away with 2 top 10’s. The fourth race, I was sitting 3rd after the last corner coming to the finish, and was caught up in a crash, breaking my collarbone.
Something was very different though. I was in better racing shape than any other time on a bike. What that really did for me, was provide motivation. Throughout my recovery, Pete was still there, coaching me along, giving advice and pointers. I was on my trainer 3 days post crash, pushing myself to keep some fitness. I have kept that motivation, and am having the best off season I’ve ever had.
Pete’s system works well with my “daily life” schedule. He tailors my schedule to my lifestyle, and it works seamlessly. He constantly wants feedback, and is in touch with you multiple times per month. The online monthly workout schedules are extremely convenient. Pete has the ability to hone in on your strengths and weaknesses, develop them, and make you a much better cyclist.
Pete’s resume is rather impressive. His accomplishments speak for themselves. Even more so, is his personal training routine. Reading his blog is, well, scary and impressive at the same time. The amount of dedication and hard work is a testimony to his commitment to cycling. That same dedication, commitment and experience is transferred to his clients.
I could not have asked for a better overall experience. Pete provides excellent coaching that will help you reach your goals, and quite possibly, beyond."
~ Jerry Rebo - "I had been racing off and on since 1996, but I never really took training that seriously. I decided for 2009 that I was going to get serious about it, but I didn't want to rely on the ad-hoc "whatever I feel like doing" training method I'd mostly used to that point. I wanted a coach, but being the picky person I am, I had some conditions:
1. No armchair coaches. I wanted someone who raced, and knew first-hand the exertion involved.
2. I needed proof that the training methods used work.
3. Lastly, as real grown-up guy with a job and responsibilities, I needed to know that some flexibility could be worked into the program should life intervene.
In Pete, I found all these things. He's an active racer with national-level results; he follows his own training philosophy and his resume speaks for itself. His plans tend to be very simple; like his slogan says, intensity, efficiency, and focus are stressed above all. You tell him your goals, he tells you what you need to do to get there. He doesn't make you guess at anything; if you train with a powermeter, he tells you down to the watt where he wants you, for how long, and what systems are being stressed. And when something funky happens in my routine and I miss a ride, or am unable to complete one, he finds a way to work the missed training back into the schedule.
I've had coaches before, and they would tell me what to do, but they never really told me why. Pete doesn't do this; he lets you know exactly why you're doing what you're doing, and he doesn't stop there. His knowledge of nutrition and its benefits on training is top-notch; when coupled with the kind of program he advocates, the pounds melt off much faster than you would ever have expected.
It should be noted that when you climb onto your bike for a Cannell session, you'd better be coming to work. There's absolutely no wasted time; you're either resting hard or riding hard. If you tell him you want to win races, that's what he's going to prepare you for. As he says, "Races aren't won riding tempo."
That said, he'll never have you do anything he doesn't think you're ready for. And in the unlikely event that you can't finish a prescribed workout, he can usually find out why - maybe not enough or improper recovery from the night before, too much stress from daily life, etc - and he'll talk you off the motivational ledge and have you ready to attack it again the next day.
In the time I've worked with Pete, my threshold power has already jumped significantly. Motivation is at an all-time high, weight is at a twenty-year low, and I'm chomping at the bit to pin on a number - something I haven't felt in a long time."
~ Michael Stearns - "When looking for a coach, I essentially wanted 2 things. I wanted them to be attentive/available and I wanted them to possess the understanding to provide thoughtful workouts/advice according to evidence-based principles. Secondary attributes would include experience racing at or above my current level and economic value. (One coach offered me his services for $1000/month)
Peter has more than fullfilled these goals. Following his victory in our team sponsored TT by over 3 min on a 30 min course, I did some research, exchanged some emails/phone calls, and made the plunge.
As aforementioned, the relationship is all I can ask for. He is responsive and thoughtful, typically returning emails in a few hours and frequently following it up with further thoughts once he has digested the question fully.
Despite entering the relationship in fairly good form, I have already made significant progress in just a few months, and I look forward to continuing the same in the months/years to come."
