About Pete

Peter Cannell is a lifelong racer having started racing when he was 14. He has raced in the US and abroad and is a current category 1 racer. Peter holds the 2007 Masters Nationals Road Race Championship and the 2008 & 2009 Masters Nationals Time Trial Championships as well as numerous road race, criterium and time trial victories and course records.

Peter holds a USA Cycling Level 3 coaching certification. In addition to coaching certification, Peter holds a B.S. in Engineering, minor in exercise physiology and a M.S. in Biomedical Engineering.

Peter's technical background coupled with the focus on exercise physiology has helped him develop a very scientific, analytical approach to training. His approach to training is very different that the "old school" notion of performing large volumes of low intensity work (aka "base miles") in the winter in favor of a more focused approach. Peter's core training philosophy is that Functional Threshold Power (FTP) is the basis of the athlete's fitness and training to improve FTP year round is the most effective way to achieve peak results.

Peter is also a student of the psychology of exercise and motivation and realizes athletes all have different motivations and goals. Peter realizes that one size does not fit all and enjoys creating fully customized training plans that incorporate just the right amount of structured training and unstructured training to not only improve the athlete's fitness but to also maximize their enjoyment in the sport.

In addition to training expertise, Peter has spent significant time utilizing wind tunnel testing dating back to his B.S. in engineering at Virginia Tech. He has spent time in the wind tunnel tuning his time trial position as well as working with other athletes to reduce drag and save significant wattage in time trials. This is a key area of focus for Peter and one in which he continues to pursue cutting-edge technologies and techniques.

Peter resides in Mebane, NC with his wife Kristy and dog Cooper. Peter coaches athletes through the US and abroad and is currently enjoying the laid back atmosphere of the Masters 35+ racing scene in the Southeast.
